Fight Hair Loss with PRP

There are few things more disheartening than looking in the mirror and having someone stare back at you who looks far older than you feel—or are, for that matter. For most men, hair loss isn’t something that lurks down the road, along with a rocking chair and cane. In fact, ⅔ of men in the United States start to lose their hair when they’re only 35 years old. And by the time men hit 50, a whopping 85% of them have significantly thinning hair.

And it isn’t just a man’s world when it comes to hair loss. Approximately 40% of women experience hair loss by the age of 40.

Here at Pure Skin Laser & Aesthetic Center, we’re pleased to offer a treatment that successfully combats hair loss by tapping a power within your own body. Instead of fighting hair loss with outside chemicals, medications, or surgery, we can now work with your body’s own growth factors to encourage new, healthy hair growth.

Called platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, therapy, here’s a look at what many of our clients in Bismarck, North Dakota, already know: You’ve had the tools within you all along.

The power of platelets

In order to understand how PRP works, let’s step back and take a quick look at the science behind it. Your blood contains four major ingredients: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma (the liquid these are all carried in). Your platelets’ primary role in your blood is for clotting. But your platelets are also chock full of proteins, which are also known as growth factors, and they play a considerable role in regeneration and healing.

The history of healing

The orthopedic branch of medicine was among the first to figure out how to tap the potential of platelets to help injuries heal faster. Orthopedic doctors figured out how to extract the platelets from a patient’s blood sample using a centrifuge. Once the platelets were isolated, they were mixed back in with the plasma, creating a platelet concentrate 5-10 times richer than normal, and then injected into the patient’s injury in order to speed up healing.

With its success in the orthopedic world, medical experts in other fields began to experiment with PRP elsewhere, and doctors found that it was successful in promoting new, healthy hair growth, as well as shoring up existing hair follicles.

Moving ahead

At Pure Skin Laser & Aesthetic, we’ve helped many of our patients regain hair through minimally invasive PRP treatments, and we can do the same for you. You should count on coming in for three to four treatments, spaced four weeks apart.

During each treatment, we collect and process your blood and inject the resulting PRP into your scalp where you’d like to see more growth. We like to wait between treatments to let the platelets go to work so we can see where we need to fill in during your next visit.

Your results will be gradual as your new hair begins to grow in. Typically, after two or three months, you’ll begin to notice a difference. In order to maintain and encourage this new hair growth, we also recommend that you come back every six months for a quick PRP boost.
